Padroni – padroni. Italian, padroni
a master boss, an employer, especially of immigrant labourers, who provides communal housing and eating arrangements, controls the allocation of pay etc., in a manner that exploits the workers, an innkeeper.
At first glance, this introduction may seem a little odd, but please allow me to explain the relevance of this seemingly uncharacteristic opening for telling you all “About Us”.
It all began with a name, a company name. This name is meant to be a reflection of whom and what your company is and represents, right? Perhaps you’re the practical kind and chose a name that was symbolic of the type of industry you represent, perhaps you are of a warm and fuzzy nature and so conjured an acronym derived from the letters of your children’s’ names, or perhaps, as in my case, you decided to take the manly route and choose a name that not only sounded macho but also told the world that you are the master of your domain, (no pun intended) and that you mean business.
So, filled with all the enthusiasm of an on-line gamer anticipating the arrival of the next Battlefield instalment, I began my search for that one historical individual that would aid me in my quest to affirm my business enterprise.
On further reflection however, the mere thought of the word “historical” brought to mind images of reading through endless lists and autobiography’s of long forgotten heroes. Most definitely, in my mind, not the most productive/pleasant way to spend my time, especially since any time not spent on other matters pertaining to business could best be spent “tanning a tjop with a cold one in hand”.
Since the prospect of having to visit countless sites and actually read through these lists and autobiographies filled me with dread, I decided that visual stimulation would be a more effective, (and easier), means of research, so naturally I turned to the movies.
Now bearing in mind that like many others of my kind, (man), hold to the theory that all the answers to life’s problems can be found in movies, I turned to what I consider to be the epitome of wisdom and machismo, The Godfather.
From what to pack for your visit to Durb’s, “Leave the gun, take the Cannoli”, to explaining to your mates why you switched to the winning team, “it’s not personal Sonny, it’s strictly business”. There is nothing that can be learned from therapy that cannot be learned from The Godfather and just as Vito Corleone was the Don, the Padroni of his empire, so I would be of mine.
Now, although I have no desire to exploit immigrant labourers or control the allocation of their pay, I do consider myself an In-keeper of sorts.
